Legend of Amheis the Dragonrider
The last great Legend is also the most important (however controversial) to Human kind and the most substantiated. It occurs in conjunction with the founding of the nation of Calfon and the War of Dragonfires (or the Calfite Rebellions as the Galbarians would name it). The War of Dragonfires began as a border dispute between the cross-roads vassal-city state of Calfonest and the territorial member-city state of Galt. The dispute concerned a particularly fertile patch of land south of the Q’tar Range that was watered regularly from rains generated from Lake Inkirim further to the south. Both Calfite and Galt farmers claimed certain significant acreage along the poorly established border between the two prosperous and powerful city-states.
Tensions between the two rose to a boiling point when harvesters from both Calfon and Galt started harvesting along the border first to claim “their share” of the harvest. Violent altercations broke out and both city states sent in support troops to secure the vital harvest of grains. Days after the troops from each city arrived in force there was a fire. No one knows exactly where it started, but it ravaged the dry, ripe fields and wiped out scores of men. Both powers blamed the other and both declared war the next day.
Both cities were technically under the authority of the most powerful of Galbariancities, Telfrorm. However, the coalition of city-states that is Galbar was unable to come to an agreement about what exactly should be done, if anything, before blood was shed in earnest. The first battle was the Battle of Shrieking Winds. It occurred at a small resupply station on the border right at the half-way point between the Mountains and the Lake. Around 50 Calfite soldiers, about 30 of them skilled archers, met and massacred a group of about 70 Galt men. Exact numbers are impossible to come by. From that point on there was nothing the Galbarian government at Telfrorm could do to avert the war.
Calfonest and Galt fought fiercely along the same open stretch of plain for decades with precious periods of peace between them. That area is now known as the Barrens and is still haunted by undead, constructs and horrible persistent death magics. The insanity finally came to an end in the person of Amheis the Dragonrider.
He never told anyone where he was from. If anyone asked, those records did not survive. All that is known is that one day his great dragon Volos the Gleaming descended from the sky and laid waste to an entire battalion of Galt Paramilitary specialists. This was the turning point in the war. From then on Calfon won every engagement that Volos and Amheis entered. Galt soon sued for peace and the present day border was established by the Dragon Accords. There is also nothing but speculation as to why he chose to fight for Calfonest. After seeing to the establishment of the Accords, he disappeared. There were sightings thereafter of Volos flying among the clouds or devouring Galt probes into Calfite territory, but precious few were ever substantiated.
