Magic and World

Calfon and Galbar are both still suffering from the War of Dragonfires in one significant way. During the war, both sides committed their entire reserves and resources to the cause to the detriment of all other activities. As a result, all powerful casters were conscripted and sent to the front lines to hold off the enemy’s powerful casters. Over the course of time all powerful casters became primary targets for direct and indirect elimination (focused strikes, assassination, etc.). Eventually the deep secrets of arcane lore and divine inspiration were lost to the War. It should be noted that even divine magics were affected by this. Most clerics have legends of the spells the High Theurges used to cast and the divine power they wielded against the horrors and darkness of war, but none know the exact names or methods of requisitioning these powerful abilities from their gods.

Recovery has been slow in coming. To this day most of the secrets possessed by the great mages of the War are still buried with them somewhere in the Barrens.

Lusem, however, did not suffer this fate. They were uninvolved in the war, so none of their books were burned and none of their mages were slain. Many envoys and expeditions have been sent by Galbar and Calfon to recover the secrets that the powerful Elders and other mages know, but they have all either returned fruitless or have never been seen again. It is not known why all the tribes of Lusem guard their secrets so closely. Chances are that one of the hundreds of tribes would have come forward by now to trade their knowledge, but that has not happened. Those have returned have been able to report only that the tribes have been orderd not to share their knowledge by someone or something that is held in universal awe and fear by all the tribes. Exactly what this entity is remains a mystery.
